Welcome to part three of our A to Z of building terms. We have chosen a selection of common terms you may come across in the process of buying, building, selling or renovating your home.

A KEEPER is the metal latch plate in a door frame into which a doorknob plunger latches.

A KING POST is a central vertical post used in architectural or bridge designs, working in tension to support a beam below from a truss apex above.

A LANDING is the platform between flights of stairs or at the termination of a flight of stairs.

A LINTEL is a structural member or beam which carry the load over an opening.

A MITRE is half the angle of a joint e.g. the corners of door and window architraves

MORTAR is a composition of lime and/or cement and sand, mixed with water in various proportions.

A NEWEL POST is the large starting post to which the end of a stair guard railing or balustrade is fastened.

NOGGING is a horizontal piece of timber fixed between studs in a framed wall.
